HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Pravastatin Sodium
Pravastatin Sodium falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Manchurian Thorn interacts with.
Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (Tricor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo).
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: pravastatin (Pravachol) is processed by your liver, and like all statins it can occasionally stress the liver. Manchurian Thorn, in high doses in animal studies, has shown signs of liver irritation too. The thinking is that stacking two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, add up and make liver problems a bit more likely.
I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not real-world reports in people, so I wouldn't panic. Watch for warning signs like unusual tiredness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pain in the upper right belly. Before combining these, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially since your liver enzymes can be monitored with a simple blood test.
