Maqui and Isotretinoin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Isotretinoin and Maqui in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Isotretinoin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Isotretinoin is filed under 4 classifications — including retinoids, cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, photosensitizing drugs. Maqui has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (minor) — and none of Isotretinoin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Isotretinoin. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 46,523 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Isotretinoin that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Maqui’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Maqui side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Maqui has no side effects.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Isotretinoin

This page covers Maqui only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Isotretinoin page lists 49 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Vitamin A (major), African Wild Potato (moderate), Alfalfa (moderate) and Angelica Archangelica (moderate).

By severity: 2 major · 35 moderate · 12 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Isotretinoin page

“Vitamin A is the first thing anyone on isotretinoin (Accutane, Absorica, Claravis) should check their supplements for, because isotretinoin is itself a vitamin A derivative and stacking more on top can push levels into toxic range. It is one of two major-rated entries among the 49 supplements and herbs known to interact with this acne…”

About Maqui

What is Maqui?

  • Antioxidant support
  • Blood sugar support
  • Eye health and dry eye
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Heart health

Maqui is a dark purple berry from Chile that is very rich in antioxidant plant pigments called anthocyanins. Early research suggests it may help with things like blood sugar, dry eye, and inflammation, but the human evidence is still limited and far from proven. It is generally well tolerated as a food, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.

Aristotelia chilensis · Elaeocarpaceae · Berries (fruit); leaves are used traditionally · Capsules, powder, juice, extracts, dried berries

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Maqui is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Maqui record says about it on its own.

Maqui: dosing

There is no official or well-established dose for maqui. Doses used in research have varied widely depending on whether the product was a juice, powder, or standardized extract, so it is hard to recommend a single amount. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them.

About Isotretinoin

What Is Isotretinoin Used For?

Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane

Isotretinoin is used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne — large, deep, inflamed breakouts (nodules 5 mm or bigger) that haven't cleared with conventional treatments like antibiotics. It is approved for non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older. Brands include Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and generic isotretinoin capsules.

Because of its serious potential side effects, isotretinoin is reserved for patients whose acne is truly severe and has not responded to other standard treatments. A typical course lasts 15 to 20 weeks, and many patients experience prolonged remission — sometimes permanent clearing — after a single course.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Isotretinoin
