Marjoram and Antithrombin III

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Antithrombin III

Antithrombin III falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Marjoram interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that marjoram extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, marjoram might increase the risk of bleeding when used in medicinal amounts along with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Antithrombin III (Thrombate III) is an injectable blood-thinning protein, usually given in a hospital setting to help prevent dangerous clots, often during surgery or childbirth in people who are low on this natural clotting regulator. Marjoram, when used in concentrated supplement or essential oil form, may keep your platelets from sticking together the way they normally would. Stack that on top of a medicine already designed to thin your blood, and the concern is a little extra bleeding.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it comes only from lab and test-tube studies, so it's theoretical, not proven in people. Marjoram as a kitchen herb is very unlikely to matter. Still, since this drug is used in serious situations, mention any marjoram supplements to your care team.

  • Sleep and relaxation
  • Respiratory complaints (cough, congestion)
  • Menstrual discomfort
  • Aromatherapy for stress

Marjoram is a Mediterranean kitchen herb related to oregano that is widely used in food and traditional medicine for digestive, sleep, and respiratory complaints. Most of its health claims rest on traditional use and small lab or animal studies rather than strong human trials. It is generally considered safe as a food, but concentrated supplements and essential oils should be used with caution and avoided in pregnancy.
