Here's the gist with marshmallow root and your alprazolam (Xanax): marshmallow is loaded with mucilage, a slippery, gel-like fiber. The thinking is that this gel could form a coating in your gut that slows or slightly reduces how much alprazolam your body soaks up. If that happened, you might notice a little less of the calming, anti-anxiety effect you're counting on.

I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in real patients, and it's rated minor. A simple fix covers it: take your alprazolam first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your marshmallow. If you have questions about timing, your pharmacist is happy to help.

What Is Alprazolam Used For?

Brand names: Xanax, Niravam

Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.

Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
