Here's the gist with marshmallow root and your cough medicine. Marshmallow is loaded with mucilage, a slippery gel-like fiber. The thinking is that this gel could coat your stomach and gut just enough to slow down or slightly reduce how much benzonatate gets absorbed. If less of it makes it into your system, you might notice it just doesn't quiet your cough as well as usual.

I'll be honest with you though, this one is theoretical. It's based on how mucilage behaves, not on real cases of problems with benzonatate. An easy fix is to space them out: take your benzonatate first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

Benzonatate capsules are used for the symptomatic relief of cough. This applies to all benzonatate capsule products — including Benzonatate 100 mg and Benzonatate 200 mg formulations taken by mouth.

It is intended to reduce the urge to cough when coughing is disruptive or uncomfortable. It does not treat the underlying cause of the cough.
