Laboratory research shows that carob, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Take carob 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: carob is full of fiber and tannins, and those can grab onto things in your stomach and slow down how much gets absorbed. So if you swallow your benzonatate (Tessalon) at the same time as a carob-heavy snack or a drink thickened with carob gum, there's a chance a little less of the medicine makes it into your system. That could mean your cough isn't quieted quite as well.

Honestly, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab studies looking at minerals, not on real benzonatate cases, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a bit of carob in your diet. To play it safe, just separate them: take your benzonatate first, then have carob 30 to 60 minutes later. Never chew the capsules, and check with your pharmacist if your cough isn't easing up.

Carob is a Mediterranean tree whose pods are widely used as a caffeine-free, naturally sweet cocoa alternative and as a thickener (carob gum). It is mostly eaten as a food and is generally well tolerated, and carob pod preparations have some traditional and limited research use for diarrhea, but evidence for most medicinal claims is limited. It is intended to reduce the urge to cough when coughing is disruptive or uncomfortable. It does not treat the underlying cause of the cough.
