Ofloxacin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Marshmallow interacts with.

Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with marshmallow and your antibiotic. Marshmallow root is loaded with mucilage, a slippery gel-like fiber that coats your stomach and gut. The concern is that this gel could grab onto ofloxacin and keep some of it from being absorbed into your bloodstream. If less of the antibiotic gets in, it may not knock out your infection as well as it should.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in studies, so don't panic. The easy fix is timing: take your ofloxacin first, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before using marshmallow. When in doubt, ask your pharmacist to help you space them out so your antibiotic does its job.

Marshmallow root is a traditional herb rich in soothing, gel-like fibers called mucilage, which is why it has long been used for coughs, sore throats, and stomach irritation. Evidence for these uses is mostly traditional and preliminary, but it is generally considered gentle and well-tolerated for short-term use. As with any supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines.

About Ofloxacin

What Is Ofloxacin Used For?

Brand names: Oflox, Floxin, Floxin Injection, Floxin Otic

Ofloxacin is used in several different forms, each approved for specific infections. The otic (ear) solution treats outer ear infections (otitis externa) in patients 6 months and older, chronic middle ear infections with a ruptured eardrum (chronic suppurative otitis media) in patients 12 and older, and acute middle ear infections in children 1 year and older who have ear tubes. The ophthalmic (eye) solution — including the brand Ocuflox — treats bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Ofloxacin oral tablets treat adults with mild to moderate bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, skin and skin structure infections, gonorrhea, chlamydial infections of the urethra or cervix, mixed urethral/cervical infections, and acute pelvic inflammatory disease. The oral tablet is also used for acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated cystitis, but only when no other treatment options are available, due to serious risk concerns with this drug class.
