Here's the simple version: marshmallow root is full of mucilage, a slippery, gel-like fiber. The concern is that this gel could coat your stomach and gut and make it a little harder for your body to soak up a pill like rifabutin taken at the same time. If less rifabutin gets absorbed, you'd have lower levels working against the bacteria, which matters when you're treating or preventing something serious like MAC or H. pylori.

The good news is this is only a theoretical worry based on how mucilage behaves, not proven harm. An easy fix is timing: take your rifabutin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the marshmallow. Always run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding any supplement.

What Is Rifabutin Used For?

Brand name: Mycobutin

Rifabutin capsules are used to prevent disseminated MAC disease — a serious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium avium complex — in patients with advanced HIV infection.

It is not approved to treat active tuberculosis, and it should not be used alone against active TB. It is also not proven to prevent M. tuberculosis infections.
