Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear clozapine. There's a theory that nutmeg, thanks to a compound called myristicin, might speed that enzyme up. If that happened, your body could break down clozapine faster, leaving less of it in your system. That could mean your symptoms aren't as well controlled.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is: it comes only from animal experiments using injections, not real people eating nutmeg. The amount you'd sprinkle into food almost certainly won't matter. Since clozapine is a drug that's carefully dosed and monitored, don't change anything on your own. Just have a quick word with your prescriber or pharmacist if you're considering nutmeg supplements.

Theoretically, concomitant use of nutmeg and anticholinergic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of either agent.

Here's the gist for clozapine. Clozapine has strong anticholinergic activity, meaning part of how it acts is by blunting the brain chemical acetylcholine. Nutmeg, at least in lab and animal studies, seems to do the opposite by nudging acetylcholine levels up. In theory, those two could partly cancel each other out, so clozapine might not work quite as well, or its anticholinergic side effects (like dry mouth, constipation, blurry vision) might shift a little.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on animal research, so it's a weak signal. A pinch of nutmeg in your food almost certainly won't matter. Large medicinal doses are a different story and are dangerous on their own. Clozapine is a closely monitored drug, so loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding nutmeg supplements.

What Is Clozapine Used For?

Brand names: Clozaril, Versacloz

Clozapine is used for two specific situations. First, it is prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have already tried other antipsychotic medications and have not gotten adequate relief. It is reserved for this group because of its serious risks.

Second, clozapine is used to lower the chances of repeated suicidal behavior in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who are considered to be at ongoing, chronic risk. It is not a first-choice medication — it is used when the need is serious and other options have fallen short.
