Onion and Aspirin, Meprobamate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Onion interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Meprobamate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Onion in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Meprobamate

Aspirin, Meprobamate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Onion interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs with onion might increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro research shows that onion inhibits platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

This combo product pairs aspirin, a blood thinner that keeps platelets from clumping, with meprobamate, a muscle relaxant. The piece that matters here is the aspirin. In lab dishes, onion compounds also make platelets less sticky, so stacking concentrated onion supplements on top of aspirin could, in theory, add to that blood-thinning effect.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based mostly on test-tube work, not strong human studies. Onion in your food (in soups, salads, or cooked dishes) is very unlikely to cause trouble. The question is really about high-dose onion supplements. If you take one, just watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

ASPIRIN

Concomitant use of aspirin with onion may worsen onion allergy.
In one case report, a patient with a mild onion allergy reported worsening allergy, including swelling and severe urticaria, after taking aspirin.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with Micrainin (which combines aspirin with the muscle relaxant meprobamate) and onion. This isn't about onion changing how your body breaks down the medicine. Instead, the concern is about allergy. There is a single case report where a person with a mild onion allergy noticed it got worse after taking aspirin, with symptoms like skin swelling and a bad case of hives (urticaria).

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It's anecdotal, basically one story, so for most people eating onion in food this is unlikely to be a problem. But if you already know you're allergic or sensitive to onion, the aspirin in Micrainin could in theory make a reaction feel worse. If you notice swelling, itching, or hives, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before going further.

Onion is a common food with a long history in traditional medicine, and it contains antioxidants like quercetin and sulfur compounds. Eating onion as part of a balanced diet is safe for most people, but high-dose supplements have only limited human evidence for any specific health condition. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated onion products for a medical reason.
