Lapatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.

Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, moderately inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4).

Here's the gist for Tykerb (lapatinib). Your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. Oregon grape contains berberine, which in lab and early human studies appears to slow that same enzyme. If the enzyme works more slowly, lapatinib can clear out less efficiently and its levels may creep up.

For lapatinib, higher levels could mean stronger side effects like diarrhea, nausea, hand-foot skin reactions, rash, and (importantly) heart rhythm changes such as QT prolongation. To be fair, this concern is mostly theoretical right now, not proven in people taking both together. Still, since this is serious cancer therapy, please don't add Oregon grape without first running it by your oncologist or pharmacist.

About Lapatinib

What Is Lapatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tykerb

Lapatinib tablets — sold under the brand name Tykerb — are used to treat advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients whose tumors overexpress the HER2 protein. They are always used in combination with another medicine, not alone.

Tykerb is approved in combination with capecitabine for HER2-positive advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients who have already received prior treatment including an anthracycline, a taxane, and trastuzumab, and whose disease has progressed on trastuzumab. Tykerb is also approved in combination with letrozole for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer when hormonal therapy is appropriate.
