Oregon Grape + Olanzapine
Olanzapine brand name: Zyprexa.
Oregon Grape has a moderate interaction with Olanzapine. Theoretically, Oregon grape might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Olanzapine
Olanzapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Oregon Grape interacts with.
In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of Oregon grape, can inhibit cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6).
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: the berberine in Oregon grape can gently slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, which is one of the helpers your body uses to clear olanzapine. When that enzyme is partly blocked, olanzapine can clear a bit slower and build up in your blood. Since olanzapine is the active drug itself (not a prodrug), more of it sticking around means you might feel its effects more strongly.
In practice, that could show up as extra drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, or feeling foggy. The good news: this is mostly a theoretical concern based on lab work and limited human data, so it's far from certain. Still, if you're thinking about adding Oregon grape supplements, run it past your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on how you feel.
