Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)
Why this applies to Moclobemide
Moclobemide falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Panax Ginseng interacts with.
Concomitant use of Panax ginseng with phenelzine (Nardil) is associated with insomnia, headache, tremors, and hypomania.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Moclobemide is a reversible MAOI used for depression, so it works by slowing down the breakdown of certain mood-related brain chemicals. Panax ginseng has been linked to overstimulation when combined with another MAOI (phenelzine), with reports of trouble sleeping, headaches, tremors, and feeling unusually wired or high-energy (hypomania). The concern is that ginseng's stimulating nature could stack on top of moclobemide and push things in that same direction.
That said, this is based on anecdotal reports and is largely theoretical, so it is not a guaranteed or severe reaction. Still, since both can be activating, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially if you notice restlessness or sleep problems. Please don't change your moclobemide on your own.
