About Atovaquone

What Is Atovaquone Used For?

Brand name: Mepron

Atovaquone oral suspension — available as the brand Mepron and as generic products — is used in adults and adolescents aged 13 and older who cannot tolerate trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), the usual first-choice treatment.

It is approved for two purposes: preventing PCP in people at high risk, and treating mild-to-moderate PCP in those who already have it. It has not been studied for severe PCP or for people whose PCP is not responding to TMP-SMX, so it is not used in those situations.
