Phosphatidylserine and Ipratropium, Albuterol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Ipratropium, Albuterol

Ipratropium, Albuterol falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Phosphatidylserine interacts with.

Theoretically, phosphatidylserine might decrease the effectiveness anticholinergic drugs.
Phosphatidylserine is thought to increase acetylcholine levels, which could theoretically interfere with the activity of anticholinergic agents.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Combivent combines two breathing medicines: ipratropium, which is an anticholinergic that helps open your airways by blocking acetylcholine, and albuterol, which relaxes the airway muscles a different way. The interaction on file only touches the ipratropium piece. The idea is that phosphatidylserine may raise acetylcholine levels in the body, and since ipratropium works by blocking that exact chemical, the supplement could in theory work against it and make your inhaler a little less effective.

Honestly, this is mostly a theoretical concern based on limited evidence, and ipratropium acts mainly right in your lungs, so a real-world effect on your breathing is unlikely. Still, if you use Combivent for COPD or asthma and you are thinking about phosphatidylserine, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and watch for any extra wheezing or shortness of breath.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ipratropium, Albuterol page

“Combivent (ipratropium with albuterol) is an inhaler that opens the airways two ways at once, by blocking acetylcholine and stimulating beta receptors, and both mechanisms give supplements a route to pile on. Its list of 45 interacting ingredients warrants real attention, chiefly because two rate major: henbane and scopolia, herbs whos…”
