Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2D6. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2D6 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2D6 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada). In a test tube, propolis can slow that enzyme down. If that slowdown happened in real life, your aripiprazole levels could creep up, which might mean more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness, dizziness, tremor, or trouble with movement.

The good news is this is mostly theoretical. Animal studies didn't show a real effect, and it has never been reported in people. Everyday or food-level amounts of propolis are very unlikely to matter, though concentrated high-dose supplements are less studied. Since Aristada is a long-acting injection you can't easily dial back, it's worth mentioning your propolis use to your prescriber or pharmacist.

Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. Here's the gist with Aristada (aripiprazole lauroxil), which is a long-acting injection your body partly clears through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, some propolis compounds appear to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, aripiprazole could build up a bit, which might mean more side effects like drowsiness, restlessness, dizziness, or feeling shaky.

The honest part is that this is mostly theory. The evidence comes from lab and animal studies, and even animal research at high doses didn't show a real effect. It hasn't been reported in people, and food-level exposure is very unlikely to matter. Still, if you take concentrated propolis supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Abilify Asimtufii is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and as maintenance monotherapy for bipolar I disorder in adults. Aristada is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, with Aristada Initio used specifically to help start Aristada therapy.
