Why this applies to Remdesivir

Remdesivir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version: there's a theoretical concern that propolis, taken in concentrated supplement doses, could block an enzyme called CYP3A4. That enzyme helps your body process remdesivir (Veklury). If it were slowed down, remdesivir levels could in theory climb a bit, which might raise the odds of side effects like nausea or liver enzyme changes that this drug is already watched for.

But I want to keep this in perspective. The evidence here is weak, coming only from lab dishes and animal studies, and even those don't agree. It has never been shown to happen in real people. Remdesivir is also given in the hospital or clinic by IV, where your team monitors you closely. Still, mention any supplements, including propolis, to your doctor or pharmacist so they have the full picture.

What Is Remdesivir Injection Used For?

Brand name: Veklury

Veklury (remdesivir) is given by IV infusion to treat COVID-19 caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is approved for adults and for children from birth through age 17 who weigh at least 1.5 kg (about 3.3 lbs).

Veklury can be used for patients who are hospitalized with COVID-19, or for patients who are not hospitalized but have mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and are at high risk of getting worse — including being hospitalized or dying from the disease.
