Here's the thinking behind this pairing. Cyclophosphamide is often used to quiet down an overactive immune system, whether that's part of cancer therapy or treating an autoimmune condition. Quillaia's saponins, in lab studies, have shown the opposite tendency. They can nudge the immune system to be a little more active. So in theory, taking concentrated quillaia could work against what cyclophosphamide is trying to do and make it less effective.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is theoretical. It comes from test-tube research, not from people, so we don't truly know if it matters in real life. The small amounts of quillaia used in foods and drinks are very unlikely to be a problem. If you're considering a concentrated quillaia supplement, please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first so they can weigh in on your specific situation.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

About Cyclophosphamide

What Is Cyclophosphamide Used For?

Brand names: Cytoxan, Neosar

Cyclophosphamide is used to treat many types of cancer in adults and children, including malignant lymphomas (such as Hodgkin's disease and Burkitt's lymphoma), multiple myeloma, several forms of leukemia, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma, and advanced mycosis fungoides (a type of skin lymphoma). It is often given alongside other chemotherapy drugs rather than on its own.

Oral and injectable powder formulations (but not the Cyclophosphamide Injection solution concentrate) are also approved for minimal change nephrotic syndrome — a kidney condition — in children who have not responded well to, or cannot tolerate, steroid therapy. The injectable solution concentrate is approved for adult patients only due to its alcohol content, and is not approved for use in children.
