Here's the idea behind this pairing. Sotyktu (deucravacitinib) works by calming down part of your immune system to control plaque psoriasis. Quillaia, on the other hand, contains saponins that in lab dish studies seemed to give the immune system a little nudge in the opposite direction. So the worry is that quillaia could, in theory, work against what your medication is trying to do, potentially making your psoriasis less well controlled.

I want to be honest with you though: this is purely a theoretical concern. It comes from test-tube research, not from real people taking these together, so we don't actually know if it matters in the body. Small food amounts of quillaia (like in some drinks) are very unlikely to be a problem. If you're thinking about a concentrated quillaia supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or dermatologist first.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

What Is Deucravacitinib Used For?

Brand name: Sotyktu

Sotyktu (deucravacitinib) is approved to treat two conditions. First, it treats moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy. Second, it treats active psoriatic arthritis in adults.

Sotyktu is not recommended for use alongside other potent immunosuppressants (medicines that strongly suppress the immune system).
