Here's the thing to know about combining quillaia with Imfinzi (durvalumab). Durvalumab is an immunotherapy drug, but unlike typical immunosuppressants it actually works by revving up your immune system to attack cancer cells. The saponins in quillaia have shown immune-stimulating activity in lab studies, so on paper they shouldn't blunt durvalumab's effect the way they might with a drug meant to calm the immune system.

I want to be upfront: this interaction is theoretical, based only on how the compounds behave in test tubes, not in people taking durvalumab. We simply don't have human data here. Because cancer treatment is high-stakes, I'd skip quillaia supplements while on Imfinzi and run it by your oncologist or pharmacist first. Food amounts used as an emulsifier are not a concern.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

About Durvalumab Injection

What Is Durvalumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Imfinzi

Imfinzi is used to treat a wide range of cancers in adults. For lung cancer, it is approved for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (given before and after surgery), unresectable Stage III non-small cell lung cancer (after chemoradiation), metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, limited-stage small cell lung cancer (after chemoradiation), and extensive-stage small cell lung cancer.

Beyond lung cancer, Imfinzi is also approved for locally advanced or metastatic biliary tract cancer (cancers of the bile ducts and gallbladder), unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer), mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer, BCG-naive high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, muscle-invasive bladder cancer, and resectable gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma (stomach cancer at the junction with the esophagus). Most of these uses involve Imfinzi given alongside other chemotherapy drugs.
