Here's the thinking on this one. Deflazacort is a corticosteroid that works partly by calming down an overactive immune system. The concern with quillaia is that some of its saponins have shown immune-stimulating activity in lab studies. If quillaia nudges the immune system in the opposite direction, it could, in theory, work against what deflazacort is trying to do, possibly making it a little less effective.

I want to be straight with you though: this is purely theoretical, based on test-tube research, not on real people taking these together. It's a low-concern item. Food amounts of quillaia (like in some fizzy drinks) are very unlikely to matter; concentrated herbal doses are the bigger question mark. Since deflazacort treats a serious condition, just mention any quillaia supplement to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Quillaia (soap bark tree) is a plant whose bark contains foaming compounds called saponins, and it is widely used as an emulsifier in foods and drinks. As a supplement or herbal remedy its benefits are not well proven, and large amounts can be irritating or toxic, so it should be used cautiously and only as directed.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
