Drug & supplement interaction

Ribose + Methenamine Hippurate

Methenamine Hippurate brand names: Urex, Hiprex.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Ribose and Methenamine Hippurate in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Ribose and Methenamine Hippurate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Methenamine Hippurate and Ribose in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Ribose safety at a glance

Ribose overall Use caution Often well tolerated short-term, but it can lower blood sugar and long-term safety is not well studied.
Pregnancy Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided while breastfeeding.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Methenamine Hippurate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Methenamine Hippurate is filed under 2 classifications — antibiotic drugs, oral drugs. Ribose has documented interactions with 2 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate) and insulin (moderate) — and none of Methenamine Hippurate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Ribose and Methenamine Hippurate May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

“Most people taking methenamine hippurate (Hiprex, Urex) use it daily to prevent repeat urinary tract infections, and many also take probiotics, which is where the bulk of this 44-ingredient list sits. Even so, the page deserves real vigilance, because one entry is rated major.”

About Ribose

What is Ribose?

  • Energy and fatigue
  • Athletic performance and recovery
  • Fibromyalgia symptoms
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Heart-related (cardiac) conditions

Ribose (D-ribose) is a simple sugar your body makes naturally and uses to build energy molecules like ATP. Some people take it for fatigue, fibromyalgia, exercise recovery, or heart conditions, but solid human evidence is limited and mostly small or preliminary. It is generally well tolerated in short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, especially if you have diabetes.

Not applicable (a naturally occurring simple sugar) · Powder, capsules, tablets, drink mixes

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Ribose is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Ribose record says about it on its own.

Ribose: dosing

There is no official standardized dose of ribose, and the amounts used in studies have varied widely depending on the goal. Because of this, it is best to follow the directions on the product label. To lower the chance of stomach upset or low blood sugar, some people take it with food and start with a smaller amount.

About Methenamine

What Is Methenamine Used For?

Brand names: Urex, Hiprex

Methenamine is used to suppress or prevent frequently recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), including pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and cystitis (bladder infection). It is intended for long-term or ongoing use after another antibiotic has already cleared the active infection — not as a first treatment for a new, acute infection.

Methenamine Mandelate (available as an oral solution and tablet) is also indicated for infected residual urine that can occur with certain neurologic diseases. It is not appropriate as the sole treatment when an infection is causing systemic symptoms like chills and fever.
