What is this?
The interaction data in the HelloPharmacist supplement database is licensed from Natural Medicines Pro by TRC Healthcare (Therapeutic Research). HelloPharmacist pharmacists often add our own analysis and context on top of that licensed data — such as this Bottom Line summary and the notes on individual interaction pages — and any such commentary is noted as ours. Most people taking methenamine hippurate (Hiprex, Urex) use it daily to prevent repeat urinary tract infections, and many also take probiotics, which is where the bulk of this 44-ingredient list sits. Even so, the page deserves real vigilance, because one entry is rated major. Activated charcoal can bind the drug in the gut and cut how much your body actually gets, undermining the protection you take it for.
Twenty-seven entries run the other way. Since methenamine works against bacteria, it can kill the live organisms in probiotic products, weakening the supplement rather than the drug. The other 17 mostly change how oral medicines absorb; bulking fibers such as glucomannan can reduce uptake, and the 33 moderate and 10 minor ratings trace to these two patterns. Space doses well apart for fibers and probiotics, but clear charcoal with your pharmacist before using it at all.

How Does Our Interaction Checker Work?
Behind every verdict on this page is a category system. Our source database doesn’t document supplement interactions drug-by-drug — it documents them against groups of medications that behave the same way (for example, “drugs processed by the CYP3A4 liver enzyme” or “blood-thinning medications”).
So the check works in three steps: (1) Methenamine Hippurate is classified into the pharmacology categories it belongs to, (2) every supplement interaction documented against any of those categories is inherited by Methenamine Hippurate, and (3) each ingredient keeps its own severity, likelihood, and evidence grades from the underlying record. That’s why one supplement can carry several records for one drug — it may interact through more than one category.
Methenamine Hippurate sits in 2 interaction categories. Open any one to see what the group means:
Antibiotic Drugs 27 ingredients
A pharmacology grouping from our source database: medications in this group share a property that certain supplements are known to interact with, so an interaction documented for the group applies to every drug in it.
27 of the supplement ingredients on this page reach Methenamine Hippurate through this category.
Oral Drugs 17 ingredients
A pharmacology grouping from our source database: medications in this group share a property that certain supplements are known to interact with, so an interaction documented for the group applies to every drug in it.
17 of the supplement ingredients on this page reach Methenamine Hippurate through this category.
