Adrue and Methenamine Hippurate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Methenamine Hippurate and Adrue in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Methenamine Hippurate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Methenamine Hippurate is filed under 2 classifications — antibiotic drugs, oral drugs. Adrue has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being barbiturates (moderate), benzodiazepines (moderate) and cns depressants (moderate) — and none of Methenamine Hippurate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What Methenamine Hippurate’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Adrue. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Methenamine Hippurate’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Pain or burning when passing urine Worth acting on
  • Itching
  • Nausea mentioned in 6.6% of FDA reports for Methenamine Hippurate
  • A skin rash
  • Vomiting

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Methenamine Hippurate. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 1,210 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Methenamine Hippurate that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Adrue’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Adrue side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Adrue has no side effects.

About Adrue

What is Adrue?

Adrue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Digestive upset, gas, and diarrhea
  • Calming or sedative effect
  • Traditional use for fevers and infections

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Cyperus articulatus · Cyperaceae · Rhizome (underground stem) and tubers; sometimes the essential oil · Dried rhizome, powder, tea or decoction, traditional preparations, essential oil

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Adrue is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Adrue record says about it on its own.

Adrue: dosing

There is no established standardized dose for Adrue. Traditional use varies widely, and reliable human studies have not defined a safe and effective amount. If you choose to use a commercial product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them. A pharmacist can help you review the product and decide whether it is appropriate for you.Do not use Adrue as a substitute for medical care, especially for ongoing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or signs of infection, which may need proper diagnosis and treatment.

About Methenamine

What Is Methenamine Used For?

Brand names: Urex, Hiprex

Methenamine is used to suppress or prevent frequently recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs), including pyelonephritis (kidney infection) and cystitis (bladder infection). It is intended for long-term or ongoing use after another antibiotic has already cleared the active infection — not as a first treatment for a new, acute infection.

Methenamine Mandelate (available as an oral solution and tablet) is also indicated for infected residual urine that can occur with certain neurologic diseases. It is not appropriate as the sole treatment when an infection is causing systemic symptoms like chills and fever.
