Oxcarbazepine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the simple version: oxcarbazepine already tends to make people feel drowsy, dizzy, or a little unsteady, especially when you first start it. Adrue has been studied mostly in animals, where it seemed to lengthen sleep time when paired with sedating drugs. So the worry here is added sleepiness, not a change in how your body breaks down the medication. Stacking the two could leave you feeling more tired, foggy, or wobbly than usual.

Keep in mind this is theoretical and comes from lab and animal work, not human trials, so I don't want you to panic. Still, since both can calm the nervous system, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and please don't stop or adjust your oxcarbazepine on your own.

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. What Is Oxcarbazepine Used For?

Brand names: Trileptal, Oxtellar XR

Oxcarbazepine treats partial-onset seizures (seizures that start in one area of the brain). It can be used alone (monotherapy) or alongside other seizure medicines (adjunctive therapy).

For adults, oxcarbazepine tablets, film-coated tablets, and oral suspension are approved for both monotherapy and adjunctive therapy. Oxcarbazepine extended-release tablets are approved for partial-onset seizures in patients 6 years and older. In children, Trileptal and oxcarbazepine oral suspension are approved as monotherapy in children aged 4–16 and as adjunctive therapy in children aged 2–16.
