Adrue + Alprazolam
Alprazolam brand names: Xanax, Niravam.
Alprazolam falls into 2 drug categories that Adrue can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Adrue interacts with whole categories of medication. Alprazolam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Adrue in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Alprazolam
Alprazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both Adrue and Xanax (alprazolam) can calm and slow down the brain. When you pair two things that do the same job, the calming effect can stack on top of itself. With alprazolam, that could mean feeling more drowsy than usual, foggy thinking, dizziness, or being slower to react. Adrue doesn't change how your body breaks down the drug, it just adds to the sedation.
Now, the honest part: this concern comes from animal and lab studies, where the combo lengthened sleep time, not from solid human research. So we can't say exactly how strong it would be in real life. To be safe, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially before driving or anything that needs full focus.

BENZODIAZEPINES
2 of 2Alprazolam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Xanax (alprazolam): it already calms an overactive brain and tends to make people drowsy. Adrue has traditionally been used as a mild calming herb, and in animal studies it seemed to deepen and lengthen the sleepiness from a related benzodiazepine. So the worry is simple addition. Stacking adrue on top of your alprazolam could leave you more sedated than expected, with extra grogginess, dizziness, slowed reflexes, and a higher chance of stumbling or feeling foggy.
I want to be honest about the evidence though: this is based on lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven danger. Still, drowsiness with alprazolam is real, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alprazolam page
“Sedation stacking is the core danger with alprazolam (Xanax), a benzodiazepine for anxiety and panic, and this list deserves genuine care rather than a quick skim. Dozens of entries, alcohol chief among them, deepen its drowsiness and can slow breathing, while an even larger group changes how the body clears the drug through the CYP3A4…”

About Adrue
What is Adrue?
- Nausea and vomiting
- Digestive upset, gas, and diarrhea
- Calming or sedative effect
- Traditional use for fevers and infections
Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
