CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Alfentanil
Alfentanil falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Alfentanil is a powerful, fast-acting opioid painkiller, usually given through an IV during surgery or procedures. Like other opioids, it slows down your brain and breathing. Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) has a calming, sedating reputation in traditional use, so the concern here is simple: two things that both quiet the nervous system could add up. Together they could mean deeper drowsiness, slowed or shallow breathing, lower blood pressure, and harder-to-wake sedation.
To be fair, this warning rests on animal and lab studies, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because alfentanil is so potent and given in carefully controlled settings, even small extra sedation matters. Please tell your anesthesia team or pharmacist about any adrue use before a procedure, and don't start or stop anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alfentanil page
“Alfentanil (Alfenta) is a potent, fast-acting opioid, usually given during surgery, and that potency is why this page deserves genuine care rather than a passing glance. Ten of the 202 ingredients listed are rated major, and they cluster into two problems: extra sedation stacked on a drug that already suppresses breathing, and changes…”

About Adrue
What is Adrue?
- Nausea and vomiting
- Digestive upset, gas, and diarrhea
- Calming or sedative effect
- Traditional use for fevers and infections
Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
