Adrue and Temazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Adrue interacts with whole categories of medication. Temazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Adrue in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Temazepam

Temazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Temazepam already does the heavy lifting of calming your brain so you can fall asleep. Adrue, the calming sedge used in traditional remedies, appears to push in the same direction. In animal studies, pairing it with a related benzodiazepine roughly multiplied sleep time, so the worry is simple added sedation when the two are taken together.

In real terms, that could mean feeling more drowsy than expected, deeper grogginess or a 'hangover' feeling the next morning, dizziness, or trouble waking fully. Keep in mind this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, not human studies, so we can't be sure how strong it really is. Still, it's worth running past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Temazepam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with diazepam increases total sleep time four-fold compared to the effects of diazepam alone. Theoretically, concomitant use adrue and benzodiazepines might increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Some benzodiazepines include clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and others.

Here's the simple version: temazepam is a sleep medicine that already calms brain activity to help you nod off. Adrue may have its own mild calming effect. When you put the two together, the worry is that they could add up and make you more sedated than you bargained for. That could mean heavier next-morning grogginess, dizziness, poor balance, slowed reflexes, or trouble waking fully during the night.

I want to be straight with you, though: this concern comes from animal research only, not solid human studies, so we can't say how strong it really is in people. Still, since both are sedating, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're older or take other drugs that cause drowsiness.

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Temazepam page

“Alcohol is the interaction I would flag first for anyone taking temazepam (Restoril), a benzodiazepine sleep medicine. Beer and wine both carry major ratings because they layer their own sedation on top of a drug that already depresses the nervous system, and that additive drowsiness runs through 78 of the 197 supplements on file.”

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent.
