Codeine Phosphate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the gist with codeine and adrue: this isn't about how your body breaks codeine down. It's about overlapping effects. Codeine is an opioid that already slows the brain and makes many people feel drowsy, foggy, or sleepy. Adrue has traditionally been used as a mild calming agent, and in animal studies it made sedative drugs work much longer. So pairing the two could stack that sleepiness.

What this means for you: together they might leave you feeling extra groggy, dizzy, or slow to react, and in theory could deepen the slowed breathing opioids can cause. Keep in mind this is based only on lab and animal work, so the real risk in people isn't well proven. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Codeine Sulfate tablets are used for the management of mild to moderate pain in adults and adolescents when other treatments have not worked well enough or are not tolerated. It is an opioid medication, so it is only appropriate when non-opioid options are inadequate.

Because of its serious risks — including addiction, misuse, and overdose — codeine is reserved for patients who truly need an opioid. Prescribers are expected to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
