Nelarabine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the honest picture: the interaction on file is really about Adrue's possible calming, sleep-promoting effect adding to other things that slow the brain down. Nelarabine isn't a typical sedative, but it is a chemotherapy drug that crosses into the nervous system and is well known for causing drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, and other nervous-system side effects. So in theory, pairing it with a calming herb like Adrue could leave you feeling more sleepy, foggy, or unsteady than usual.

Keep in mind this concern comes only from animal and lab work (very weak evidence), so it's more of a 'be aware' than a proven problem. Nelarabine is a serious cancer medicine, so please don't add Adrue without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Nelarabine Injection Used For?

Brand name: Atriance

Nelarabine injection (brand name Arranon) is used to treat two aggressive blood cancers: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) and T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL). It is approved for adult and pediatric patients age 1 year and older whose disease has not responded to — or has come back after — at least two prior chemotherapy regimens.

Nelarabine injection may also be given in combination with multi-agent chemotherapy as part of treatment for newly diagnosed T-ALL and T-LBL in certain settings, as studied in clinical trials.
