Why this applies to Codeine Phosphate

Codeine Phosphate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Hordenine interacts with.

Hordenine weakly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, hordenine might increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates.
Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the twist with codeine: it's actually a prodrug. Your body needs an enzyme called CYP2D6 to convert codeine into morphine, which is what actually relieves your pain or quiets a cough. Hordenine appears to weakly block that same enzyme, at least in lab dish studies. So instead of building codeine up, slowing this enzyme would likely mean less morphine is formed, which could leave your codeine working weaker than expected.

That said, this is based only on test-tube data, the effect is rated weak and minor, and it's truly theoretical. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if you notice your pain or cough not easing the way it usually does, give your pharmacist or doctor a quick call.
