Hordenine and Pseudoephedrine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

STIMULANT DRUGS

Why this applies to Pseudoephedrine Sulfate

Pseudoephedrine Sulfate falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Hordenine interacts with.

Hordenine is structurally similar to N-methyltyramine and synephrine, constituents in bitter orange known to have stimulant properties. Theoretically, taking hordenine with drugs with stimulant properties might increase the risk of hypertension and other adverse cardiovascular effects.
Some of these drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, methylphenidate, pseudoephedrine, and many others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both hordenine and pseudoephedrine lean on your body's 'fight-or-flight' system. Pseudoephedrine already works by tightening blood vessels (that's how it clears a stuffy nose), and hordenine is thought to nudge norepinephrine in a similar stimulant direction. Stack the two and you could, in theory, get a bigger combined push, things like a racing or pounding heart, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or a bump in blood pressure.

I'll be honest, this concern is based on how these compounds look and act in the lab, not on strong human studies, so it's more of a sensible caution than a proven danger. Still, if you have any heart or blood pressure issues, I'd skip combining them. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking both together.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pseudoephedrine Sulfate page

“Most people reach for pseudoephedrine (Afrinol, Drixoral N.D.) for a stuffy nose without much thought, often with their usual coffee, tea, or a weight-loss supplement nearby, and that casual pairing is where the trouble sits. Pseudoephedrine already pushes heart rate and blood pressure up, and 44 of the 62 supplements on file act as st…”

About Hordenine

What is Hordenine?

Hordenine
  • Energy and stimulation
  • Athletic and workout performance
  • Weight loss/fat burning
  • Focus and mood
  • Appetite control

Hordenine is a natural alkaloid found in barley and some cacti that is marketed as a stimulant for energy, focus, and fat loss, but solid human evidence for these benefits is lacking. Its safety in people has not been well studied, so caution is warranted, and it should be avoided in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and by people with heart conditions.
