Hordenine and Phenelzine Sulfate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)

Why this applies to Phenelzine Sulfate

Phenelzine Sulfate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Hordenine interacts with.

Hordenine is structurally similar to tyramine In vitro research shows that hordenine is a selective substrate for monoamine oxidase-B in the liver. Theoretically, concomitant use of hordenine with MAOIs might increase blood pressure, potentially leading to a hypertensive crisis.
Some MAOIs include isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar), and tranylcypromine (Parnate).

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the concern with pairing hordenine with Nardil (phenelzine). Phenelzine blocks the enzyme that normally breaks down stimulant-like chemicals in your body, including substances similar to tyramine. Hordenine is structurally a lot like tyramine, so the worry is that with that enzyme shut down, hordenine and the norepinephrine it stirs up could pile up instead of being cleared. In theory, that can spike your blood pressure sharply, which we call a hypertensive crisis (think pounding headache, chest pain, sweating, or a racing heart).

I want to be honest: this warning is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave in the lab, not on real cases. But because phenelzine MAOIs are unforgiving with anything tyramine-like, I'd play it safe and skip hordenine supplements. Please run it by your doctor or pharmacist first.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Hordenine

What is Hordenine?

Hordenine
  • Energy and stimulation
  • Athletic and workout performance
  • Weight loss/fat burning
  • Focus and mood
  • Appetite control

Hordenine is a natural alkaloid found in barley and some cacti that is marketed as a stimulant for energy, focus, and fat loss, but solid human evidence for these benefits is lacking. Its safety in people has not been well studied, so caution is warranted, and it should be avoided in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and by people with heart conditions.

About Phenelzine

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine treats depression in people described as “atypical,” “nonendogenous,” or “neurotic.” These patients often have a mix of anxiety and depression, along with phobic or hypochondriacal features (intense fears or excessive worry about health).

It is rarely the first antidepressant tried. It is more suitable for people who did not respond to the drugs more commonly used. Evidence is less conclusive for severe depression with endogenous features. These uses apply to Phenelzine Sulfate tablets and Nardil tablets.
