Phenylephrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Hordenine interacts with.

Hordenine is structurally similar to N-methyltyramine and synephrine, constituents in bitter orange known to have stimulant properties. Theoretically, taking hordenine with drugs with stimulant properties might increase the risk of hypertension and other adverse cardiovascular effects.
Some of these drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, methylphenidate, pseudoephedrine, and many others.

Here's the gist: phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by tightening up blood vessels in your nose, but it can nudge up your blood pressure and heart rate too. Hordenine is a mild stimulant that may bump up norepinephrine, your body's 'rev the engine' chemical. Put the two together and you could be stacking two stimulant-type effects on top of each other.

In practice, that might mean a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or a higher blood pressure reading. I'll be honest with you, this concern is theoretical and based on how these compounds behave, not on strong human studies. Still, if you have any heart or blood pressure issues, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Phenylephrine Used For?

Brand names: Gilchew, AH Chew D, Gilchew IR, Sudafed PE, Biorphen

Phenylephrine is used in a number of different forms for different purposes. Intravenous (IV) phenylephrine — including products like Biorphen and Immphentiv — is given in hospital settings to raise blood pressure in adults when it drops dangerously low due to blood vessel widening (vasodilation), such as during anesthesia. Phenylephrine Hydrochloride Injection 10 mg/mL is also approved for use in septic shock (a life-threatening infection that causes a severe drop in blood pressure).

Nasal spray and drop products (such as Neo-Synephrine and Equate Nasal) temporarily relieve nasal congestion from colds, hay fever, or upper respiratory allergies. Ophthalmic (eye drop) solutions dilate the pupil for eye exams. Rectal suppository products (such as Preparation H and ReVIVOL-XR) help relieve itching, burning, and discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
