Why this applies to Estazolam

Estazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with sodium thiopental or diazepam increases total sleep time up to four-fold compared to the effects of the drugs alone. Theoretically, concomitant use of adrue with CNS depressants might cause additive sedation. Some CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, such as diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and estazolam (ProSom); barbiturates, such as mephobarbital (Mebaral), phenobarbital (Luminal Sodium), and pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal); zolpidem (Ambien); and others.

Here's the simple version: Estazolam already slows down your brain to help you fall asleep, and adrue may have its own mild calming, sleep-promoting effect. Put them together and those effects could stack up. In animal studies, adrue made sedative drugs last much longer, so the worry here is extra drowsiness, not a faster or weaker drug.

For you that could mean feeling more groggy, dizzy, or unsteady, having trouble waking up, or staying foggy into the next morning. I want to be honest, though, this is based on lab and animal work, not human studies, so the real-world size is uncertain. Since both push in the same sedating direction, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Animal research suggests that taking adrue in combination with diazepam increases total sleep time four-fold compared to the effects of diazepam alone. Theoretically, concomitant use adrue and benzodiazepines might increase the risk of drowsiness and motor reflex depression. Some benzodiazepines include clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan), and others.

Here's the simple version: Estazolam (Prosom) already works by quieting brain activity to help you fall asleep, and Adrue may have a calming effect of its own. Put them together and those two sedating actions could stack up. The concern is more of the same things estazolam can already cause, like heavy drowsiness, grogginess the next morning, dizziness, poor coordination, and slowed reflexes.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is based only on animal research (one study showed longer sleep time when adrue was paired with a related benzodiazepine), so it's theoretical in people, not proven. Still, since both can make you sleepy, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent. Solid human studies are lacking, so its real benefits and safe doses are not well established. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Estazolam Used For?

Estazolam tablets are used for the short-term management of insomnia — specifically trouble falling asleep, waking up frequently during the night, and waking too early in the morning.

Because insomnia is often temporary, long-term use of estazolam is generally not recommended. If sleep problems last beyond 7–10 days of treatment, a doctor should evaluate whether an underlying medical or psychiatric condition is causing them.
