Etravirine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Sage interacts with.
In vitro evidence suggests that aqueous extracts of sage can inhibit CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for etravirine (Intelence): this is one of your active HIV medicines, not a prodrug that needs activating. Your liver partly clears it using an enzyme called CYP2C19. Lab studies hint that concentrated sage may slow that enzyme down, which could let etravirine build up a little. In theory that might mean more of its usual side effects, like rash, nausea, or numbness and tingling.
The important word here is theoretical. This comes from test-tube research only, and it has never actually been reported in people. Cooking with sage is very unlikely to matter. I'd just be cautious with concentrated sage capsules, extracts, or the essential oil. Since staying steady on HIV therapy is so important, run any sage supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the basic idea with sage and etravirine (Intelence). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down etravirine. In lab tests (test tube only, not people), concentrated sage extracts seem to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in the body, etravirine could build up a bit, which might mean more side effects like rash, nausea, or tingling sensations.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This has never actually been reported in a real person, so it's mostly theoretical. Cooking with sage in your food is very unlikely to cause any problem. The bigger question is concentrated sage capsules or oil taken daily. Since etravirine is an HIV medicine where steady levels matter, just run any sage supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with sage and your HIV medicine etravirine (Intelence). Your body clears etravirine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, water-based sage extracts seemed to slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in a real person, etravirine might build up slightly, which could mean more of its usual side effects, like nausea, rash, or headache.
The important thing: this is only theory from lab dishes, and it has never actually been seen in people. Normal cooking with sage is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated sage capsules or sage oil are the bigger question mark. Since keeping HIV controlled is so important, please run any sage supplement past your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Sage is a common kitchen herb that is generally safe in food amounts and is traditionally used for sore throats, digestion, sweating, and memory. Some early research is encouraging for sore throat and menopausal hot flashes, but most uses are not well proven. Concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used carefully because high doses contain a compound called thujone, which can be harmful.

What Is Etravirine Used For?
Brand name: Intelence
Etravirine (brand name Intelence) is used to treat HIV-1 infection in people who have already received other antiretroviral (HIV) treatments — meaning it is meant for patients whose HIV has had a chance to develop resistance to earlier therapies. It is always used as part of a combination regimen with other HIV medications, never on its own.
Both the brand Intelence and generic etravirine tablets are approved for adults and for children ages 2 to under 18 who weigh at least 10 kg (about 22 pounds) and who have already been treated with other HIV drugs.
