Here's the concern with pairing Scotch Broom and phenelzine (Nardil). Phenelzine is an MAOI, which means it blocks the enzyme that normally breaks down a substance called tyramine. Scotch broom flower is reported to contain tyramine, so taking the two together could let tyramine build up in your body.

When tyramine piles up while you're on an MAOI, it can trigger a sudden, dangerous spike in blood pressure (a hypertensive crisis). Warning signs include a pounding headache, racing heart, sweating, chest pain, or a stiff neck. This is a theoretical caution based on how these compounds behave rather than firm human studies, but because the outcome can be serious, I'd treat it carefully. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before using Scotch broom while on phenelzine.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
