In vitro evidence suggests that shark cartilage might stimulate immune responses. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the honest picture for Pretomanid. The concern on file comes from the idea that shark cartilage might rev up the immune system, which could theoretically work against medicines that calm the immune system down. But Pretomanid isn't one of those drugs. It's an antibiotic for drug-resistant TB that kills the bacteria directly, so this immune-stimulating idea doesn't really line up with how Pretomanid works.

On top of that, this interaction is purely theoretical, based only on lab dish studies, never seen in real people. So I wouldn't expect a meaningful problem here. Still, shark cartilage has little proven benefit and its own safety concerns, and TB treatment is too important to gamble with. Please run any supplement past your doctor or pharmacist first.

About Pretomanid

What Is Pretomanid Used For?

Brand name: Pretomanid

Pretomanid Tablet is used only as part of a three-drug combination regimen with bedaquiline and linezolid. It is approved for adults with pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis (TB) that has become resistant to multiple standard TB drugs — specifically those resistant to isoniazid, rifamycins, a fluoroquinolone, and a second-line injectable antibiotic.

It is also approved for adults with TB resistant to both isoniazid and rifampin who cannot tolerate standard therapy or whose TB has not responded to it. This approval is based on limited clinical data, and pretomanid is intended for a specific, narrow patient population only.
