Sorghum and Omalizumab

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Omalizumab and Sorghum in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Sorghum at all — not against Omalizumab, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Omalizumab’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Sorghum. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Omalizumab’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you take both. 3 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Bone thinning Worth acting on
  • Wheezing Worth acting on
  • A severe allergic reaction Worth acting on
  • Pain in an arm or leg
  • Joint pain
  • Itching
  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • A skin rash

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Omalizumab. Read the label on DailyMed › Sorghum’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Sorghum side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Sorghum has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Omalizumab page

“None of the 53 supplements on file for omalizumab (Xolair) carries a major rating, so this is a list to read with steady attention rather than alarm. Xolair treats allergic asthma and chronic hives by calming part of the immune system, and every entry here pulls the other way: these are immune-stimulating products, echinacea and astrag…”

About Sorghum

What is Sorghum?

  • Gluten-free food source
  • Blood sugar support
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Digestive health and fiber
  • Antioxidant support

Sorghum is a nutritious, naturally gluten-free cereal grain rich in fiber and plant antioxidants, and it is mainly valued as a whole food rather than a proven medicine. While its nutrients may support heart, digestive, and blood sugar health as part of a balanced diet, supplement-style health claims are not well proven. As a food it is generally safe for most people; check with your doctor or pharmacist before using concentrated extracts.

Sorghum bicolor · Poaceae · Grain (seed); sometimes bran, leaves, and stalk · Whole grain, flour, syrup, bran extract, cereals, and gluten-free baked goods

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Sorghum is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Sorghum record says about it on its own.

Sorghum: dosing

There is no established medicinal dose for sorghum. As a food, it is simply used in normal recipe amounts, like other grains such as rice or wheat. For supplement forms like bran or extracts, a standardized dose has not been set. If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed the recommended amount. A pharmacist can help you decide whether a sorghum supplement is appropriate for you and review it alongside your other medicines.

About Omalizumab Injection

What Is Omalizumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xolair

Xolair is used for several allergy-driven conditions. It treats moderate to severe persistent asthma in adults and children 6 and older whose symptoms aren't controlled by inhaled steroids alone and who test positive for a year-round airborne allergen. It is also used as an add-on maintenance treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (ongoing sinus inflammation with polyp growths) in adults 18 and older who haven't responded well to nasal corticosteroids.

Xolair is also approved to reduce allergic reactions — including anaphylaxis — from accidental food exposure in adults and children aged 1 and older with IgE-mediated food allergy. It must be used alongside strict food avoidance, and it is not a substitute for emergency treatment like epinephrine. Finally, Xolair treats chronic spontaneous urticaria (persistent hives with no identified trigger) in adults and adolescents 12 and older who still have symptoms despite antihistamine treatment.
