In vitro research suggests that summer savory extract inhibits platelet aggregation and adhesion. Theoretically, summer savory might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs. Some anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Here's the gist with warfarin: it already lowers your blood's ability to clot, and warfarin is a narrow-margin drug, meaning even small shifts can push you toward too much thinning. In lab dish studies, compounds in summer savory seemed to make platelets (the cells that help form clots) a little less sticky. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and nudge your bleeding risk higher.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, based on test-tube work, not human results. Sprinkling the herb on food almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated extracts or the essential oil are the bigger question mark. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, pink urine, or bleeding gums, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any savory supplement.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
