Armodafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the gist for armodafinil (Nuvigil). Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication out. Syrian Rue's compounds (harmine and similar alkaloids) appear to slow that same enzyme down, at least in lab studies. If that happens in the body, armodafinil could hang around longer and build up, meaning a stronger or longer effect.

In real terms, that might look like more of armodafinil's usual issues: trouble sleeping, headache, jitteriness, a racing heart, anxiety, or higher blood pressure. I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not proven in people. Even so, Syrian Rue carries real toxicity risks on its own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the adverse effects of dopamine agonists.
Syrian rue contains the constituent harmine. Animal research shows that harmine increases extracellular dopamine levels. The clinical significance of this effect is unclear.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Armodafinil (Nuvigil) is a wake-promoting medicine that already nudges up brain chemicals like dopamine to keep you alert. Syrian Rue contains harmine, which in animal studies pushed dopamine levels higher too. Stack two things that lean the same direction and, in theory, you could get more of armodafinil's overstimulating side effects, things like jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, anxiety, and headache.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based on lab and animal data, not real human reports, so it's far from certain. Still, Syrian Rue carries its own toxicity risks and isn't recommended for self-treatment. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before considering it.

What Is Armodafinil Used For?

Brand name: Nuvigil

Armodafinil tablets (including the brand Nuvigil) are used to improve wakefulness in adults who have excessive sleepiness linked to one of three conditions: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), narcolepsy, or shift work disorder (SWD).

In obstructive sleep apnea, armodafinil treats the sleepiness itself — not the underlying airway obstruction. If CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep) is the right treatment for you, your doctor should try that first before adding armodafinil for sleepiness.
