Benserazide, Levodopa falls under DOPAMINE AGONISTS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the adverse effects of dopamine agonists.
Syrian rue contains the constituent harmine. Animal research shows that harmine increases extracellular dopamine levels. The clinical significance of this effect is unclear.

Here's the simple version. The combo of levodopa with benserazide (Prolopa, Madopar) works by raising dopamine in your brain to ease Parkinson's symptoms. Syrian Rue contains harmine, which animal studies suggest can also bump up dopamine levels. So in theory, stacking them could push dopamine too high and make levodopa's usual side effects more likely, things like nausea, dizziness when standing, confusion, vivid dreams, or extra involuntary movements (dyskinesias).

I want to be honest that this is theoretical. It comes from lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so we don't really know how strong it is in people. On top of that, Syrian Rue acts like an MAO inhibitor and carries real toxicity risks on its own. Please don't add it without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.

What is Syrian Rue?
