Here's the short version for your birth control pill (Ortho Tri-Cyclen and similar brands containing ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate). This isn't about how well the pill prevents pregnancy. It's about your liver. Syrian Rue can be hard on the liver in large amounts, and estrogen-containing pills can occasionally stress the liver too. The concern is that stacking the two could add up and raise the chance of liver irritation.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based mostly on how these things work and on liver problems seen in people who swallowed very large amounts of Syrian Rue seeds (up to 100 grams). Even so, watch for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.

Your birth control pill, which combines ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate, gets processed by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest the harmala alkaloids in Syrian Rue may slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let the estrogen in your pill build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of the typical estrogen side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or bloating.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical, based only on test-tube research and not on real people, so the actual risk is uncertain. Still, Syrian Rue carries its own toxicity concerns and isn't something I'd recommend self-treating with. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment.
