Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Syrian rue contains beta-carboline alkaloids, including harmine, harmol, and harmane. In vitro research suggests that these beta-carboline alkaloids competitively inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes.

Here's the gist for flutamide: your body partly relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine. Syrian Rue's harmala compounds (like harmine and harmane) appear, at least in lab studies, to slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let flutamide build up a bit more than usual, which may mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects such as hot flashes, diarrhea, breast tenderness, or strain on the liver.

Keep this in perspective. This warning is theoretical, based on test-tube data rather than real people, so we don't truly know how much it matters. Still, since you're treating prostate cancer, it's worth running any Syrian Rue use past your oncologist or pharmacist first. Please don't change your flutamide on your own.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. About Flutamide

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
