Loxapine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might decrease the effects of anticholinergic drugs.
Syrian rue contains harmine. Animal research suggests that intravenous administration of harmine potentiates the effects of acetylcholine or increases acetylcholine levels.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Loxapine has some anticholinergic activity, meaning part of how it works is by quieting the action of a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Syrian Rue's harmala alkaloids may do the opposite and nudge acetylcholine levels up. In theory, that could slightly blunt some of loxapine's effects.

I want to be honest with you though: this is only a theoretical concern based on animal lab studies, not real human evidence. We can't predict how much, if at all, it would matter. The bigger worry is that Syrian Rue is an MAO inhibitor and carries real toxicity risks on its own. Please loop in your pharmacist or prescriber before combining these.

What is Syrian Rue?

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. What Is Loxapine Used For?

Brand names: Loxitane, Adasuve

Loxapine capsules are used for the ongoing treatment of schizophrenia in adults. Adasuve (loxapine inhalation powder) is used in a different, more specific situation: to quickly calm sudden, severe agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder. Because of serious safety requirements, Adasuve must be given by a healthcare professional in a certified medical setting — it is not a take-home medication.
