Phenelzine Sulfate falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Syrian Rue interacts with.

Theoretically, Syrian rue might increase the risk of serotonergic adverse effects, including serotonin syndrome, when taken with serotonergic drugs.
Syrian rue contains harmaline and harmine, which have demonstrated strong, reversible inhibition of monoamine oxidase (MAO) A and weak inhibition of MAO B in animal and in vitro research. This may increase the risk for adverse effects with serotonergic drugs.

Here's the key thing to understand: phenelzine (Nardil) is itself a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Syrian Rue contains harmala alkaloids that also block MAO. So you'd be stacking two MAO inhibitors on top of each other, which can let brain chemicals like serotonin climb too high.

This raises the risk of serotonin syndrome, which can show up as agitation, a racing heart, high blood pressure, sweating, tremor, fever, or confusion. Phenelzine also carries its own serious diet and drug cautions, and adding another MAO inhibitor only multiplies that danger. While this specific warning is rated theoretical (based on lab and animal data), the pharmacology lines up too closely to ignore. Please don't combine them, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Syrian Rue (Peganum harmala) is a traditional plant whose seeds contain potent compounds called harmala alkaloids, including MAO-inhibiting harmine and harmaline. There is little reliable human evidence that it safely treats any condition, and it carries real risks of toxicity, so it is not recommended for self-treatment. What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
