Tarragon and Rosiglitazone Maleate

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Rosiglitazone Maleate and Tarragon in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Rosiglitazone Maleate

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Rosiglitazone Maleate is filed under 6 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates, antidiabetes drugs, cytochrome p450 2c9 (cyp2c9) substrates. Tarragon has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate), cns depressants (moderate) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (maois) (moderate) — and none of Rosiglitazone Maleate’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rosiglitazone Maleate page

“Rosiglitazone (Avandia) lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, and most of the 314 supplements and herbs on this page pull on that same lever. Some 239 can move blood glucose on their own, so adding one risks hypoglycemia, the shakiness, sweating, and confusion of sugar falling too low.”

About Tarragon

What is Tarragon?

Tarragon
  • Digestive upset
  • Appetite stimulation
  • Sleep and mild restlessness
  • Toothache and oral discomfort
  • Blood sugar support (preliminary)
  • Culinary flavoring

Tarragon is a flavorful culinary herb that has been used in traditional medicine for digestion, sleep, and other complaints, but solid human evidence for any health benefit is lacking. Amounts used in cooking are generally considered safe, while concentrated extracts and the essential oil should be used cautiously because tarragon contains estragole, a compound studied for possible safety concerns. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using tarragon as a supplement.

Artemisia dracunculus · Asteraceae · Leaves and essential oil · Fresh or dried herb (culinary), tea, essential oil, extracts, capsules

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Tarragon is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Tarragon record says about it on its own.

Tarragon: dosing

There is no well-established medicinal dose for tarragon. As a food, it is used freely as a seasoning. As a tea, it is usually made by steeping a small amount of dried or fresh leaves in hot water. For capsules, extracts, or essential oil, follow the directions on the product label and do not exceed them. Because product strengths vary and estragole content can differ, it is best to use these products only with guidance from a pharmacist or doctor. Never take the essential oil internally unless specifically directed by a qualified healthcare professional.

About Rosiglitazone

What Is Rosiglitazone Used For?

Brand name: Avandia

  • Rosiglitazone is used along with a diet and exercise program and sometimes with one or more other medications to treat type 2 diabetes (condition in which the body does not use insulin normally and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood). Rosiglitazone is in a class of medications called thiazolidinediones. It works by increasing the body's sensitivity to insulin, a natural substance that helps control blood sugar levels. Rosiglitazone is not used to treat type 1 diabetes (condition in which the body does not produce insulin and therefore cannot control the amount of sugar in the blood) or diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition that may occur if high blood sugar is not treated).

  • Over time, people who have diabetes and high blood sugar can develop serious or life-threatening complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, nerve damage, and eye problems. Taking medication(s), making lifestyle changes (e.g., diet, exercise, quitting smoking), and regularly checking your blood sugar may help to manage your diabetes and improve your health. This therapy may also decrease your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other diabetes-related complications such as kidney failure, nerve damage (numb, cold legs or feet; decreased sexual ability in men and women), eye problems, including changes or loss of vision, or gum disease. Your doctor and other healthcare providers will talk to you about the best way to manage your diabetes.
