Rivastigmine falls under CHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Teazle interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that teazle extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of teazle with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects and increase the risk of cholinergic side effects.

Here's the gist with rivastigmine (Exelon) and teazle. Rivastigmine works by blocking acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which helps boost signaling in the brain. Lab studies suggest teazle may block that same enzyme. So in theory, pairing them could pile on, leaving more acetylcholine floating around and bumping up the cholinergic side effects rivastigmine is already known for: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, dizziness, stomach cramps, and sometimes a slow heartbeat.

I want to keep this honest, though. This concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's theoretical and unproven. Still, since rivastigmine already causes a fair bit of stomach upset, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding teazle. Don't change anything on your own.

Teazle (Dipsacus fullonum) is a spiky plant used in traditional and folk medicine, most notably as a tincture marketed for Lyme disease and for joint pain and skin problems. There is very little high-quality human research to support any of these uses, so its benefits remain unproven. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and never use it to replace standard treatment for serious infections like Lyme disease.

Rivastigmine treats dementia — the memory loss, confusion, and thinking problems that come with certain brain diseases. The specific conditions it's approved for depend on the form.

Rivastigmine Tartrate capsules are approved for mild-to-moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. The skin patch forms — including Exelon, Rivastigmine, and Rivastigmine Transdermal System — are approved for mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer's disease dementia, as well as mild-to-moderate dementia associated with Parkinson's disease.
