Here's the gist with Teazle and imipramine (Tofranil). Imipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant that has its own anticholinergic activity, meaning it dials down a brain chemical called acetylcholine. Some lab tests hint that teazle does the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels up by blocking the enzyme that breaks it down. In theory, the two could tug against each other, slightly working against imipramine's effects.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since imipramine can already cause dry mouth, constipation, drowsiness, and blurred vision, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding teazle.

Teazle (Dipsacus fullonum) is a spiky plant used in traditional and folk medicine, most notably as a tincture marketed for Lyme disease and for joint pain and skin problems. There is very little high-quality human research to support any of these uses, so its benefits remain unproven. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and never use it to replace standard treatment for serious infections like Lyme disease.

What Is Imipramine Used For?

Brand names: Tofranil, Tofranil PM

Imipramine is used to relieve symptoms of depression. Both Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets and Imipramine Pamoate capsules are approved for this use. Endogenous depression — the kind that seems to arise from within rather than a clear outside cause — tends to respond especially well. It may take one to three weeks before you notice the full benefit.

Imipramine Hydrochloride tablets are also approved as a short-term, add-on treatment to help reduce nighttime bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) in children aged 6 and older, after a doctor has ruled out physical causes.
