Thymus Extract and Ofatumumab

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Ofatumumab

Ofatumumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thymus Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, patients taking immunosuppressants may be at an increased risk of infection from contaminated thymus extract.
Thymus extract is derived from raw bovine thymus glands and is at risk for contamination. Tell patients to avoid thymus extract products unless these products are certified as pathogen-free.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing thymus extract with Kesimpta (ofatumumab). This isn't a classic drug interaction where one changes the levels of the other. Ofatumumab isn't a prodrug and doesn't rely on liver enzymes that a supplement would speed up or slow down. The real concern is infection risk.

Ofatumumab lowers a part of your immune system (it targets certain B-cells), so your body may fight off germs less well. Thymus extract is made from raw animal (bovine) thymus glands, which can carry contaminants. On a weakened immune system, that's a bad combination. This concern is theoretical, based on how these products work, but I'd take it seriously. If you want an immune supplement, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first, and only consider products certified pathogen-free.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ofatumumab page

“Kesimpta (ofatumumab) treats multiple sclerosis by deliberately quieting part of the immune system, and all 53 supplements on this page raise the same worry from the opposite direction. Each is thought to stimulate immune activity, which could in theory blunt what the drug is trying to do.”

About Thymus Extract

What is Thymus Extract?

  • Immune system support
  • Frequent infections
  • Allergies
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Cancer supportive care

Thymus extract is a glandular product made from the thymus tissue of animals, and it is promoted mainly for immune support. The evidence is mostly limited, preliminary, or from older studies, so it should not replace proven treatments. Because it is an animal-tissue product, talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a serious medical condition.

About Ofatumumab Injection (Multiple Sclerosis)

What Is Ofatumumab Injection (Multiple Sclerosis) Used For?

Brand name: Kesimpta

Kesimpta is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. This includes clinically isolated syndrome (a first MS episode), relapsing-remitting MS (the most common form, with flares followed by recovery periods), and active secondary progressive MS (when the disease slowly worsens but still has active flares).

It is designed to reduce relapses and slow disease activity by targeting certain immune cells believed to drive MS damage.
